Originally built as a post
office in early1950, it was eventually
converted to Crystal Industries Recording Studio in 1967 by
Andrew Berliner. Through
Andrews innovative acoustic and electrical design, the studio quickly
became one of the premier facilities in Southern California. The client list
reads like a who's who of the 60s and 70s. Artists ranging from
Barbara Streisand to Jimi Hendrix and the unquestionable high point
being the creation and recording of Stevie Wonders "Songs in the key of
Life". Other notable artists include: Supertramp, Jackson 5, War, The
Doors, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Marvin Gaye, The Byrds.
In the late 80s and early 90s the facility was leased by
Producer
Matt Hyde and projects such as Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros,
and Monster Magnet were recorded.
On September 15 2000 Eric Valentine took ownership of the building
and
it's resident the 9ft Yamaha Grand Piano (known as the Stevie Wonder Piano).
During the remaining months
of the year 2000, major renovations were done to
the main control room and upstairs areas. The rest of the
building has been a work
in progress to restore the studio to it's former glory. One
project has been to find old
photos of the studio while recording projects from the past. All
of Eric Valentine's equipment
and microphone collection from his previous recording studio HOS
Studio,
Redwood City, Ca. were installed.
